Avoiding Mars
Madness

Approaching user centered design in a non human environment

Project Description

SPONSORED PROJECT BY NASA
Avoiding Mars Madness was a 10 week sposored class by NASA. I worked in collaboration with an industrial design student, Jon Johannesson and an user experience student, Connor Henrichs.

This project was far different than we had ever been assigned with and extra challenging because, well, we were brainstorming and finding solutions for astronauts on long journey flights in the future to Mars.

The Intro

I created a minimalist animation intro combining my university's and NASA's logo which we played before our presentation at the Academy of Art 2018 Spring Show

Problem

INVOLVING THE HUMAN PERSPECTIVE TO SPACE
Isolation, confinement, distance from home, unnatural lighting and many other factors are constantly in play with astronauts in space. These factors can affect crew members mental health and morale, items that are crucial to the mission success.

"What you miss is your family, friends and the weather. It's always exactly the same." - Scott Kelly, astronaut

Research and Design Considerations

INVOLVING THE HUMAN PERSPECTIVE TO SPACE
We had 3 main design consideration to take with us into the process and those were Warm & Welcoming, Safe and Earth Related.

Final System

The final solution we created is a system of products that stimulates the astronaut's soul, body and mind and in the end, landed on an abstract P with a parking space integrated in it.
